iPhone 4S: why has standby time dropped : Here is a puzzle: where, or how, did the iPhone 4S drop 100 hours’ standby time?
Based on official figures on Apple’s site for the telephone, it features a standby duration of 200 hrs (that’s 8 days and 8 hrs). This is a very long time. But it is a smaller amount compared to 250 hrs cited for Apple’s first effort at its very own phone, the iPhone in 2007 – and it is far under the 300 hrs given for the iPhone 3GS and iPhone 4. Other battery existence figures cited by Apple marketing chief Phil Schiller throughout his presentation at Cupertino incorporated plenty of data concerning the new phone (which the brand new Siri voice assistant is impressive), and it is battery existence: 8 hrs of 3rd generation talk-time, 14 hrs of 2G talk-time, 6 hrs of Wi-Fi 3rd generation browsing, 9 hrs of Wi-Fi browsing.
Other battery existence statistics for the iPhone 4S’s battery existence – 3rd generation talk-time, 2G talk-time, 3rd generation internet browsing, video playback – are identical or better, aside from the Wi-Fi browsing, that is given at nine hrs for the 4S, and 10 for the iPhone 4.

For comparison, the Samsung Universe S II standby time is offered as 710 hrs on 2G and 610 hrs on 3rd generation standby. Samsung also gives talk-time as 520min (8hr 40min) on 3rd generation and 1100 minutes (18hr 20min) on 2G. It’s difficult to understand just how comparable they’re: Apple’s tests, given on its battery test page, claim that its standby configuration has Wi-Fi on: “All configurations were default except: Wi-Fi was connected having a network the Wi-Fi feature Request to become listed on Systems was switched off.” Samsung does not explain how its tests are carried out.
While 200 hrs is really a very long time (and 710 hrs greatly longer), the truth is that nobody will get battery existence guaranteed in specifications such as these. But they are frequently indicative – so you may expect this will indicate a particularly shorter battery existence for the iPhone 4S. (We’ll do this in later tests.)
So what’s transformed? Used to do request Apple – frequently – however it didn’t have response.
Might it’s the twin-processor A5 nick that’s getting used to energy it? Within the replay on Apple’s site, Schiller discusses battery existence at 58:20. Then he cites statistics for battery existence on various activities – but does not mention standby time.
It is possible that running the 2 cores, even just in quiescent mode once the phone is simply waiting for a phone call, is exactly what uses the energy. Possibly it’s the Siri natural language parsing system, that is triggered whenever you lift the telephone or speak straight to it, is applying enough energy without anyone’s knowledge to shorten the existence. (You are able to turn Siri off it will likely be interesting to ascertain if this is important.)
Or, alternatively, possibly it’s the iOS 5 software, that was still under development once the phone could have been prepared. Some designers have established that the iOS 5 software programs are “hefty around the battery”, or was until very recent develops. There is however no consistency there some stated these were seeing the identical battery existence.
Possibly there’s some bugs to become exercised from the iOS 5 software, which we understand has gone GM (Gold Master), and it is formally launched on 12 October.
But for now, with no response from Apple, and without anybody getting one out of a reviewer’s hands, there is no simple answer. The stated battery existence is shorter. Why? It is a mystery.
